A Hat in Time has modding tools, I'm guessing this will keep the game alive for the next 8 years until Gears makes a sequel

I'm trying my hand at making a level myself

I already have a lot installed throughout the 3 years I've been playing it, some of which are incompatible with the recent version.

It's one of those games where you come for the base and stay for the fanbase.
